Ep 15 - The Talisman Ring

Smugglers, murder plots, punch ups and a priest hole - it's quite the Famous Five adventure for Sir Tristram, Sarah, Ludovic and Eustacie (and Sir Hugh to make up the numbers).

In this episode we talk about the morbid flights of fancy of teenage girls, the allure of athletic gentlemen, and the skill required to shoot candelabras. Su also demonstrates that she understands neither French nor horse riding.

And amongst all that adventure we enjoy the sparkling chemistry between Sir Tristram and Miss Thane. Considering they're both well able to throw a devastating punch, we think they're a perfect match. In fact they'll be as happy as Sir Hugh in a wine cellar.

"Unfortunately, you, Sir Tristram, knowing nothing of me, and being possessed of a tyrannical disposition - I beg your pardon?'
'I did not speak,' replied Sir Tristram, eyeing her frostily.
Miss Thane met his look with one of liquid innocence. 'Oh I quite thought you did!'
'I choked,' explained Sir Tristram. 'Pray continue! You had reached my tyrannical disposition.'

Surprise bonus content! In this episode we imagine Shield sitting down to draw horses for Miss Thane's sketchbook - a vital part of their ruse to uncover the priest hole. Well... Su thought it would be fun to try writing that scene herself, and Rach encouraged her: Read it here.

Sooo many typos in the Arrow books editions! And yes, someone else pointed out the horse/house error, which I found hilarious. Thanks for listening.

I only recently discovered this podcast and I loved the discussion of one of my favorite books! Just one thing: it appears your edition of this book has some typos. Sir Tristram draws imaginary *houses* in Sarah’s sketchbook, not horses. Drawing houses would fit since she is supposed to be interested in architecture. Further, the paragraph you have quoted in the podcast notes also has a typo. Miss Thane looks at him with *limpid* innocence, not liquid. Other than that, I enjoyed this episode!

I didnt like the Talisman Ring, when I read it as a teenager, I didn't like Eustacie. Now reading it in my 60s I find it an hilarious romp. I found Sarah Thane and Sir Tristram much more interesting. I agree with your comments about it being like a Famous Five adventure, something I also feel about one of her first Detective novels, Footsteps in the Dark.. just like an Enid Blyton story, but for adults.
